Frequently Asked Questions
What is the length of time this will take?
It is difficult to put a precise timescale on researching and writing a family history story. It depends how much information is available at the outset, how manageable the research is, how many family members are included and printing requests. As a rough guide it would be one to three months.
What information do you require?
The more information you have the better! Birth, marriage and death certificates are good sources as are any newspaper articles and employment records. If you do not have any of these then by providing place and date of birth of a family member it is possible to research an entire family of ancestors.
What packages are available?
Following the initial consultation, it is possible to create the package you want – all family stories are unique.
How do I receive a quote?
A preliminary quote is discussed at the initial consultation this will then be confirmed by email.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
A deposit is required for all packages; a minimum payment of 25% of the package price which is non-refundable. A further 50% is required before sending the work to print with the remainder on receipt of the book.
How can I contact you?
You can contact me via mobile phone, landline, email and by using the contact form on the contact page.
Are consultations in person or over the phone?
Initial consultations are done by telephone as are follow up and update consultations. Emails are helpful for sending images and work and as a means of communication. Meetings in person are dependent on your geographical location. However, I also like to make at least one visit to the research family geographical area to assist in writing your story, wherever possible. I live in North Yorkshire.
Are the books professionally designed and printed?
The books are professionally designed and formatted by my graphic designer Shelswell Graphics and sent to professional printers.
I need this asap, is there an express service?
Generally an express service is not available; an exception to this would be for a one surname study where the research information is relatively straight forward and when a hardback book is not required. It may be possible to provide a draft copy to then follow up with a completed book.
